Q&A - eLearning Standards Especially SCORM

Tony Karrer answers reader questions such as "Is it mandatory to use SCORM while developing an E-learning Software?" to which he responds:

SCORM is as close as you get to Mandatory in the world of eLearning. You want to implement your courseware to the SCORM standard if you plan to have it launched and/or tracked under an LMS. SCORM is a fairly easy standard to deal with especially since most people are fine with a single SCO that does only single score/completion reporting. More than that is most often not expected and can cause you integration problems.

SCORM Troubleshooting

David J McClelland shares his experiences and a standard troubleshooting method for SCORM content in his blog. In this case he identified a problem with the LMS, which the vendor agreed to correct. One of his responsibilities at Kodak WWLD was to troubleshoot SCORM tracking issues.

Congratulations to Jim who was successful in securing funding to "serve as an exemplar model for creating standards-based learning objects, and in doing so, would be the first known instance of such activity at the University of Iowa using both ICON [the university’s course management system] and the LOR [learning object repository]. Learning assets created during this project would adopt the SCORM standard, so that they can be easily shared among different learning management or asset repository systems."
